Chapter 5: Manuscript Preparation and Sample Papers to Be Submitted for Publication
Note: The numbers before the headings refer to chapter sections in the fifth edition.
This chapter has been reworked on the assumption that most papers will be prepared with word-processing software.
5.02: Typeface:
- Discusses APA preference for a "serif " typeface in text to facilitate reading and for a "sans serif " typeface for figures to enhance visual presentation.
- Authors are instructed to use the functions of their word processors to create italic, bold, or other special fonts or styles of type noted in the fifth edition of the Publication Manual.
5.04: Margins: Indicates that the default setting for the top of the page and tab indents on most word-processing software is acceptable.
5.11: Spacing and punctuation: Provides new material that clarifies what is needed to produce an em dash, an en dash, and a minus sign.
5.15: Title page: Clarifies what is meant by "centered" on the page. Includes new guidelines on handling names with suffixes in the byline (e.g., Jr. and III).
5.18: References: Revised to reintroduce the hanging indent, with the first line flush left and the subsequent lines indented. (Indicates that it is permissible to use the paragraph indent if the hanging indent is difficult to accomplish with the author's word-processing software.)
5.20: Footnotes and notes:
- Author note: A new paragraph should be used to indicate a change in author affiliation.
- Footnotes: Cautions the author not to use the footnote or endnote function of their word processors.
5.26: Cover letter: Includes a new paragraph on the responsibilities of the corresponding author to make sure that all authors are in agreement with the content of the manuscript and with the order of authorship, as well as to keep coauthors informed of editorial decisions and changes made.
